W EEKLY EDITION JUNE 20, 2018 Meet PSAI Scholarship Winner De vyn Luden …continued Isabelle plans to graduate from University of Minnesota – Rochester in 2021 with a degree in Nursing Portable sanitation has been able to improve the lives of the Haitian people by providing a safe place for waste and access to clean water. Without portable sanitation, disease and illness would spread at even higher rates than it already does in this country. Today, over 75% of the Haitian people are living without access to safe sanitation. Portable sanitation products, like dry flush ing toilets, are starting to help create a cleaner and happier country. The benefits of portable sanitation stretch farther than just the country of Haiti as PSAI helps distribute products to over thirty countries in need around the world. The positive a spects of portable sanitation are also seen in its effect on the environment. Using portable toilets and sinks greatly lessens the amount of water used each day. Water is a limited resource and if we do not manage our supply carefully, clean water could be come less accessible in many parts of the world. Water conservation is a major problem that portable sanitation helps resolve. Additionally, using portable sanitation makes it less likely for the environment to be contaminated by human waste. Contamination can lead to destruction of many ecosystems and organisms that are vital to Earth's environment. The impact of portable sanitation is not always recognized in places like New England. Still, portable sanitation is always around us whether it is at your s on's soccer tournament, the community picnic, or a summer concert. Its ability to provide safe waste management, diminish the spread of disease, and preserve the environment makes portable sanitation an extremely valuable part of our world. After learni ng that she had been awarded one of the five PSAI scholarships, Devyn sent a message to PSAI Executive Director Karleen Kos. Thank you notes are not a requirement for reception, but her sentiments were too sweet not to share: Dear Mrs. Karleen Kos, I wou ld like to take this opportunity to thank you for awarding me with the PSAI Scholarship. I confidently can that the award will greatly assist my family and I as we finance the tuition costs of Providence College. When I arrive at college in just a few sho rt months, I will remember the support that PSAI has provided to me. I will use that support as motivation to excel above and beyond in the classroom. Additionally, as I discussed in my scholarship essay, I plan to continue to serve others during my time i n college. The opportunities for service at Providence College range from assisting local elementary schools to bringing life saving materials to people in the Caribbean. The PSAI Scholarship will help me attend Providence College and, therefore, keep all of these opportunities for service available to me. I am honored to be a recipient of this scholarship for the 2018 year. With thanks, Devyn Luden P AGE 13
