Beware of History Repeating Itself
If we've learned anything from the Hepatitis A outbreak in southern California, it's that ignoring the
homeless population will not prevent a sanitation crisis
In Orange County, a proposal to install public
restrooms for the homeless population in Costa
Mesa is tossed. Although the Costa Mesa
Sanitary District committed to paying half of the
cost, city council members voted against the
measure due to a lack of in terest from local
business owners. Where 80% of business owners
claimed to have their business affected by the
homeless population, more than half of them said
they believe providing facilities for the
community to safely and hygienically relieve
themselve s won't solve the problem. Councilman Jim Righeimer even went so far as to call those in
favor of the measure "freaking idiots". But wait, didn't portable toilets have a major role in helping to
eliminate something from that very region of the world recent ly? Oh yes, HEPATITIS A. No big deal.
We're sure the Costa Mesa city council has a plan (get your shots).
