Dispatch #2 from South Africa PSAI is at the table for the de velopment of an International Working Agreement on Sustainable Fecal Sludge Processing Systems More than 10 0 professionals from around the world gathered in Durban, South Africa last week to begin the process of creating an International Working Agreement (IWA) on the technical specifications for a new generation of waste processors. The effort is being coordin ated by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), with significant funding assistance from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. PSAI Executive Director Karleen Kos joined colleagues rep resenting dozens of nations in this crucial first step of a process that may lead to an ISO technical standard for these systems within the next few years. Here she answers some of your likely questions about the project. Saving the Show When Bad Actors Threaten the Portabl e Sanitation Industry The phone rings in the PSAI office. "I want to report the porta potties in the park next to my house. They are disgusting! What are you people going to do about it?" At the Nuts and Bolts Educational Conference, an operator sidles u p to a PSAI staff member, then whispers, "See [my competitor] over there? I just hired a guy who used to work for him, and my new employee says they are up to some pretty shady stuff. I don't know how he gets away with it – somebody ought to report him. Su re would be nice if the PSAI would deal with that." Email to the PSAI Executive Director. "Is it illegal for my competitor to charge less than the cost of doing business? He's a terrible operator – but why wouldn't he be? His revenues are so low! He's kil ling my business and giving the whole industry a black eye. We need to do something!"
