W EEKLY EDITION MAY 24, 2017 Question of the Week: Are ADA Portables Required if Indoor Restrooms are Available? ...continued By Karleen Kos, PSAI Executive Director If a ballpark or other outdoor facility has an ADA compliant path of travel and the time difference to visit the restroom for an able - b odied person versus a handicapped person wouldn't be substantially different, then the law probably doesn't require that an ADA compliant portable restroom be offered if standard units are not also being offered. If the field lacks an ADA - compliant path of travel to the building, or if the distance would mean a handicapped person seeking a restroom would miss a lot more of the games than an able - bodied person doing the same thing, then the law requires that ADA - compliant portable restroom be offered as a "reasonable modification" under Title III. If you and your customer decide to offer an ADA - compliant portable restroom at a field like this one, be sure to talk with the decision maker about offering standard portables as well. As PROs know, if just one ADA portable unit is there, a lot of people (not just handicapped persons) will want to use it. The combination of the increased traffic and reduced tank capacity in an ADA unit may defeat the purpose of having it for persons with disabilities. This can be a great opportunity to educate and upsell. Take yourself out to the ballgame! REMINDER: Are You Selling or Searching For Equipment?
