More than 400 Gathered for the PSAI's 48 th Annual Convention and Trade Show in Orlando! The PSAI Convention and Trade Show ran from March 15–March 18 at the Caribe Royale in Orlando, Florida Last week more than 400 people gathered in central Florida to learn from one another, conduct business, and celebrate our industry. Attendees hailed from every corner of the globe. The US and Canada were well represented, while others traveled from as far away as Iceland, Israel, Hungary, Nigeria, Brazil, New Zealand, and several Caribbean nations to take part in the event. With three days of education, a trade show floor displaying the latest products and technologies, awards recognizing excellence in our industry, and fantastic prizes, everyone had plenty of reasons to be more proud of the work we all do. Over the next few weeks we will feature photos and highlights from the event - there's simply too much to put into one issue of Association Insight. This week, we'll start with an overview and some highlights of each day. Enjoy! WEEKLY EDITION March 22, 2017 PSAI's Jan Nelson, Director of Business Development and Special Events, along with Flay Anthony, Director of Event Operations, manned the Registration Booth for members to check in as the show kicked off! Driver Safety A Focus at the Convention and Trade Show The Friday morning focus at the Convention was driver safety. Some 8.3 million large single-unit trucks are on the road in the US alone. While portable sanitation-related vehicles make up only a small portion of the total, the number of crashes across trucking has been increasing. In 2011 the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration reports there were 273,000 reportable crashes of all types; by 2016 this number had climbed to 411,000 – an increase of more than 50%. The PSAI does not have data that allows us to break down the number of incidents exclusively related to our industry. Anecdotally, though, we have no reason to think our industry has been exempted from the increases being seen elsewhere by operators of similarly sized vehicles. Is Technology Part of the Answer? To start the morning Trevor Schmidt, Lytx, presented a seminar on drive cam technology. In "Using Video Telematics to Improve Safety and Efficiency in Your Fleet," he provided a picture of what this technology can do to help companies identify and coach employees around potentially risky driving behavior, manage risks, and reduce losses in cases where the driver is not at fault for crashes that may occur.
