Call for Comment on International Working Agreement
Concerning Nonsewered Waste Systems …continued
Creation of the IWA and New International Standard
Over the course of a week, some 70 professionals from around the world conferred to develop the IWA, which is
the first part of the lengthy process that will lead to a new international standard recognized by the International
Standards Organization (ISO). The IWA is now complete, and it has been provided to Technical Advisory Groups
(TAGs) around the world for comment. This is a necessary first step toward tr ansforming the IWA into an ISO
standard. The entire ISO process will take about three years to complete.
What is a TAG?
Each country that has applied to participate in the process has its own
Technical Advisory Group or TAG. The PSAI's Board of Directors has
voted to have the PSAI Executive Director participate on the US TAG on
behalf of the PSAI, and she has been accepted by ANSI to do so.
Consequently, Karleen will be working with other US experts on the
official US response to the IWA as well as on othe r tasks that will be
involved with the creation of the new standard. The US gets just one vote on the US TAG, and Karleen will be
working with her colleagues to make sure the ultimate document consists of language that best represents the
expertise of the PSAI's members.
