Andy Gump also worked with other operators at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. Barry Gump was actively involved in the PSAI for most of his career, serving as PSAI President in 1988-89. His service on numerous committees was exemplary. Barry was a highly respected member of our Asso- ciation and, on a personal note, was very helpful and support- ive to Terri and me as we began and grew our company. In 1993, Barry was instrumental in creating "The Andy Gump Award" as the PSAI's highest and most prestigious honor. The significance and meaning of this prestigious honor are explained in the next section. Interesting notes: The 1994 movie Forrest Gump drew much attention to the Andy Gump Company. Actor Tom Hanks was once again involved with the Andy Gump Company in the 2000 movie Cast Away, as the wall of the portable restroom he found floating and that he used had the decal "Another Andy Gump" on the side! Barry Gump retired in 2012 and his daughter, Nancy, became President. In September that year, she surprised her father with a retirement party at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California. As President of the PSAI at the time, I considered it an honor to attend this momentous event. Barry was gracious and congenial as always. The PSAI and the portable sanitation industry lost an amazing person and an incredible innovator in Barry Gump on April 17, 2017. Barry was posthumously awarded the award that he created, The Andy Gump Award, in 2018. Nancy Gump continues the legacy of success as the third generation to lead the family business and to actively support the PSAI. She served on the PSAI Board of Directors during the most perilous time in our Association's history, from 2012 to early 2014. Nancy served successfully on several committees and is now Co-Chair of the Scholarship Committee. Timeless Lessons to Be Learned Although this story could have ended with the paragraph about how Nancy Gump is continuing her family legacy, that is onlyhalf of the story. As presented in the intro- duction, we can learn from the past and incorporate that knowledge today and tomorrow. Three generations of business success by the Gump Family are attributable to three generations of core values which are just as important as the 65 years of company history previously described. Numerous "Barry-isms" exist today, as Nancy refers to these core value statements. Initiated by her grandfather, formalized by her father, and still practiced today, here are the true "keys to success" of the Andy Gump Company: "Your word is your bond." "Are you a have to, a will or a want to? We need the want to's." "Us and we, not I and me." "You work with us, not for us." "We do not ask our team members to do anything that we have not done or would not be willing to do ourselves." "Success is earned, not given." "Just say yes." "There is no 'just' – refrain from using that word." "Helping people is our goal, not selling a service." "Good isn't enough." "Whatever it takes." "Experience is surviving your mistakes."
