PSAI Association Insight, September 29, 2021 I 3 Andy Gump Company – Life Lessons for Us All (continued from page 2) (continued on page 4) As for son Barry, he was born on September 26, 1942, and, as mentioned above, helped his father and his brother to build units through his high school years. Graduating from San Fernando High School in 1960, Barry served in the US Air Force in Greece and finally in Arizona. While stationed in Arizona, Barry recalled, "I helped with an eight-page weekly newsletter at the base, and I thought that I would do something related to journalism when my service was over." Fortunately for our industry and ultimately for the PSAI, Andy asked Barry to join him in the business and he agreed to work with his father! The next year, on March 11, 1965, Barry married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Cole. This wonderful couple worked together in the company until Barry retired in 2012. Daughter Nancy was born November 22, 1968. A sister, Cherilyn, tragically died at age 3 from cystic fibrosis, a cause that the Gump family has strongly supported ever since. Nancy gave an interesting and insightful explanation as to how she became involved in the family business. From the company's blog on April 11, 2015: "If you asked me at sixteen if I would work for my dad in the family business, I would have said 'Absolutely no way.' It wasn't because of what he did but because of how hard I saw my dad work when I was growing up. He worked sometimes seven days a week. I always knew that I wanted to be a mom and I never thought it was possible to be working in a family business and being a mom at the same time. In the middle of college, I had some medical interruptions and I told Dad that I would be able to help for a little bit. That was in 1992 and I have never looked back. I'm proud to say that I'm a mom of three boys, a wife and working on the family business as well. It's a dream come true." Barry succeeded Andy as President in 1972. Through the years, the Andy Gump Company continued to grow and to expand because of the hard work, dedication, and determination of this incredible family. In the 1970s, the company expanded into the portable power market and went on to add temporary fencing, barricades, mobile storage, and mobile offices. As detailed in the "Decade of the 1980s" in this series, Andy Gump coordinated and provided unprecedented service in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
