Portable
Sanitation Trivia
The August 25, 1976, article in The Bee used as a reference here
is entitled:
"Outhouse Comes of Age in This Sanitized Society"
I found this article reprinted in other newspapers; the original
source is the Washington Star in Washington, DC. We assume
the facts mentioned in the piece were the product on diligent
research since it would be printed nationally. These excerpts
give a description of our industry in the mid-1970s:
"By any name, the outhouse is serious business—650 companies,
renting about 150,000 units, two dozen manufacturers stocking
those companies. It's big business - $100 million annually. And it
is necessary business – portable units are used 5.5 billion times
a year."
Another section lists notable operators of that day:
"Jiffy John, SaniJohn, Johnny On The Spot, Don's John,
Johnny Matic, Ar-John, Honey Pot, Ecology Can, A-1, Sani-Kan,
Pee Wee, Monogram, and Satellite to mention but a few."
