Every situation is different. In order to ensure we are ready for any unanticipated discharge onto the ground, our personnel will take certain steps and carry certain supplies on our trucks needed for proper spill handling. These include at a minimum: • Carrying no more than one route usage of deodorizer and cleaning products to minimize what can be spilled • A five-gallon container of spill absorbent • A current copy of the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for every liquid carried (in plastic/waterproof cover if it is paper) • A copy of this spill procedure either electronically or in hard copy (in a plastic/waterproof cover if it is paper). • Absorbent pads and/or absorbent socks" • Plastic bags and seals for the wet/dirty items Steps for Ordinary Spill Containment by Frontline Personnel Here are the basic steps for containing a spill. Steps are presented in this order because the vast majority of spills are small, such as a tipped bucket or a hose that leaked a small amount of liquid on the ground. In those cases the consequences from the spill can be minimized by fast action to contain it. If the spill is large and cannot be contained immediately, or if personnel arrive on and discover a spill that has already occurred, (s)he should contact the company operations manager (step 6) and then proceed with the rest of the steps. Note: Personnel should be wearing PPE when cleaning a spill. 1. Stop or contain the source of the spill/leak and confine it to the extent possible. This may be as simple as turning a container upright or plugging a leak. 2. Consult Section 6 of the relevant SDS document(s) for any special spill handling instructions. (Also consult Section 4 of the SDS for first aid information and Section 8 for PPE information. 3. Vacuum all liquid possible. 4. Apply required absorbent on the spill immediately. Dry dirt may be used as an absorbent should additional absorbent be needed. 5. Allow absorbent to soak up the spill. 6. While absorbent is working, immediately notify the operations manager, dispatcher, or other responsible company representative. The responsible company representative will either notify the customer directly or request site personnel to notify the on-site job supervisor. 7. Use a dust pan and broom to place used absorbent back in the five-gallon container. 8. Return the container with used absorbent to base for proper disposal. Then obtain a replacement container of absorbent and resupply the truck. 9. Complete a spill report and file it with the appropriate parties. Other Ordinary Spill Containment Information • In general, personnel should avoid using water in a spill situation. It will only spread the spill. • Very occasionally, the SDS Section 6 on spill handling for a substance advises the chemical needs to be diluted with water. If that happens, dilute but contain the area of the spill using absorbent socks or other barriers. • If the spill reaches the soil, company personnel will need to dig up the affected area and dispose of the soil according to state and federal regulations. • Personnel should take measures to ensure that all contaminated spill cleanup materials are properly disposed. • Regardless of the specific spill circumstances, ordinary spill containment priorities are: o Stop the spill o Neutralize the contamination o Restore the environment on the site to its pre-spill condition or better
