ISO Publishes New Standard for Fecal Sludge Treatment Units…continued from page 2
Relevance to Portable Sanitation
Although most portable sanitation operators in
developed countries dispose of their liquid waste
at publicly owned treatment works (POTWs), these
facilities are not always available. Disturbingly in
recent years, their capacity and operational issues
often leave portable sanitation companies without
a convenient or affordable disposal option.
Because of this trend and the organization's
wider vision of ensuring clean, safe sanitation
is available to everyone, the PSAI participated
in the development of the new standard. The
technologies that are being developed for use
in areas where POTWs don't exist internationally
will also have application to portable sanitation in
developed countries.
