Our industry is literally evolving and changing right before our
eyes. The portable sanitation industry has gained the attention and
respect of the emergency response system, the medical community,
and the public in general. As a "necessary industry," however, the
expectations to meet the needs of our changing world have also
increased.
Restroom trailers, while gaining in use and popularity over the last
decade, have now reached a point where customer requirements and
preferences are initiating changes in both the design and the service
of this equipment. I interviewed several operators who generously shared their thoughts, experiences, and ideas
about restroom trailers.

ISO Publishes New Standard Addressing
Fecal Sludge Treatment Units
The International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) has published
a new voluntary international
product standard, ISO 31800:2020,
which will help to revolutionize
sanitation. Providing a framework
for manufacturers of non-sewered
fecal sludge treatment units, as
well as governments, regulators,
and service providers, the standard
helps assure that new sanitation systems are safe, reliable, and of
good quality.
The standard aims to reverse underdeveloped global sanitation,
and contribute to the United Nations' (UN) Sustainable
Development Goal SDG 6, to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. The
American National Standards Institute (ANSI), together with the National Body of Senegal (ASN), administer the
secretariat for ISO Project Committee (PC) 318, the group that developed the standard—with participants from
29 nations. The PSAI was one of many standards-setting organizations around the world that were engaged in the
process of developing this document.
