ASSOCIATIONINSIGHT Portable Sanitation Association International News BIWEEKLY EDITION JULY 8, 2020 Page 22 A Worldly Perspective on Deodorizers and Odor Control…continued from page 21 Operators should consider using these points to promote restroom trailers at events in place of, or in conjunction with, portable restroom units. The increased health and safety considerations of restroom trailers could be especially important to certain customers. Global Fliegenschmidt GmbH, Germany Jorgo Meyhöfer, co-CEO at Global Fliegenschmidt GmbH, shares his views on another odor reducing product that has yet to be discussed by our expert collaborators—urinal blocks. These products are placed at the bottom of the urinal where the drainage tube leads to the waste tank. The urine smell is somewhat diluted as it enters the tank and gases from within the tank also pass over this disk as they escape up through the urinal. Urinal blocks can also prevent the buildup of certain bacteria in the bottom of the urinal. It should be noted that in the last decade, several components of urinal blocks are now considered to be hazardous to both humans and to the environment. Primarily these chemicals are PDCB (paradichlorobenzene) and CFC (chlorofluorocarbon). Examine the warning labels on any products that you purchase. With over 35 years of experience in the industry, Global's products are indeed "CFC-free, non-toxic, and VOC (volatile organic compound)-compliant," Jorgo asserts. Jorgo continues, "In recent years we have been intensively working on keeping our mobile sanitary systems odorless, especially in summer. [Two years ago, we launched a new product that is] a highly concentrated deodorizer that can withstand high temperatures." Whether you use this product or similar ones from other suppliers, this may be another option for operators to further control odors. One final note of caution: check with your local wastewater treatment plant to ensure that your choice of urinal block has ingredients that are acceptable to that facility. Conclusion To all these wonderful operators and suppliers from around the world, we thank you for your insights and experiences! Please consider these ideas and suggestions in addition to the PSAI "Deodorizers: What You Need to Know" article starting on page 17. With the goal of maintaining as clean and as odor free equipment as is possible, we can continue to meet and to exceed customers' expectations. v Jorgo Meyhöfer—Global Fliegenschmidt, Germany
