ASSOCIATIONINSIGHT Portable Sanitation Association International News BIWEEKLY EDITION JULY 8, 2020 Page 21 Continued on page 22 A Worldly Perspective on Deodorizers and Odor Control…continued from page 13 Juan has several other considerations for operators: • Alternate your fragrance choice every three months or so. The customer will acclimate to a certain fragrance and it is not noticeable any longer. • As has been previously discussed, use more water in hot weather so that the effects of the fragrance can last longer, and locate the toilets "under the shadow" whenever possible. • "Dark color toilets tend to trap the heat so the odor can become quite intense." This should be a consideration in selecting colors for one's company particularly if you are located in a hot environment. • "Concentrate on key spots where fragrance is sprayed." In and around the urinal area, where the vent stack connects with the tank (which is not an airtight area), around the lid area, and in and near the air vents. • Juan states that "deodorant disks are easy to remove and are often stolen." Consider either securing these or discontinue use if they are repeatedly taken from the unit. Juan's final suggestion is incredibly unique and could be extremely helpful to all operators: "From my experience as a toilet manufacturer, [we] very often…find that the ventilation tubes are loose from the tank, especially in high use units." The leaks from this area can also bring bad odor back into the unit. He also wisely suggests, "keeping the lid down so that gases can be expelled outside instead of being pushed inside the toilet." Jets Vacuum AS, Norway Frode Bakke presents yet another method to control odors—vacuum toilet solutions. He describes his company as, "a manufacturer of vacuum toilets, vacuum pumps, and vacuum units operating vacuum toilets used in the mobile industry." Frode says that, "[Jets] solution to all issues about smell is a toilet system that never fills up, draws air out of the cubicle with every flush, and is always clean and ready for the next visitor." Their technology has been tested and proven with manufacturers, operators, and customers around the world. Restroom trailers employ this concept and, as we have seen above, odor control is less of an issue with trailers. With the COVID-19 pandemic, safety and hygiene is crucial to controlling the spread of this deadly virus. Frode states that, "The vacuum toilet solution is the only viable solution to prevent the spread of viruses at mass gatherings. That be a festival, field hospital, or a refugee camp setup." Interestingly, he continues, "The Jet Vacuum system has been chosen by the World Health Organization for use at field hospital setups worldwide." Frode Bakke—Jets Vacuum, Norway
