Sanitation Workers in India Seek Police Protection An article in the Pune Mirror details issues that sanitation workers in India face—issues that have impelled more than 3,700 to stage protests and demand police protection during night shifts. The workers, who are charged with separating garbage and enforcing penalties on residents who dispose of garbage indiscriminately, work in three shifts regardless of weather and gender. The workers detail multiple incidences of physical attacks and abuse from citizens when they attempt to implement the Swachh Survekshan 2020 campaign. The campaign—billed as the "World's Largest Cleanliness Survey for Urban Areas"—aims to create cleaner cities by improving sanitation services and changing citizens' behavior.
