Sanitation Workers in India Seek Police Protection
An article in the Pune Mirror details issues that
sanitation workers in India face—issues that have
impelled more than 3,700 to stage protests and
demand police protection during night shifts. The
workers, who are charged with separating garbage
and enforcing penalties on residents who dispose
of garbage indiscriminately, work in three shifts
regardless of weather and gender. The workers detail
multiple incidences of physical attacks and abuse from
citizens when they attempt to implement the Swachh
Survekshan 2020 campaign. The campaign—billed
as the "World's Largest Cleanliness Survey for Urban
Areas"—aims to create cleaner cities by improving
sanitation services and changing citizens' behavior.
