If your customer still feels that some "extras " are necessary after you've taken the time to discuss their proposed requirements, take them through the options. As stated, help them to understand what certain extras will or won't accomplish. For example, make sure they are aware of the pros and cons o f staking versus tying down or binding units in groups. Explain deodorizer options and their chemical composition. Give them your recommendations and costs associated with each. It is inevitable that there will be discrepancies in understanding about what is required and what is not, considering EPA's intent to allow for interpretation. The most effective way to combat misperception is proper education. If you tak e the time to have a discussion with your customer about what is required for your units, you both will feel confident doing business together and you won't lose control of your job sites due to unnecessary "requirements." There's a role for everyone to play – operators, suppliers, contracting customers, end users, government agencies, the media, and the PSAI itself. It's going to take all of us, working together, to make this shift. It can be done. Over time, portable sanitation will evolve from being "icky" to being a "trusted alternative." The speed with which this happens, though, greatly depends on how many industry members take a page from Admiral Perry's book an d how many are more like Pogo. Remember: it isn't about having perfect resources, perfect people, or a perfect plan. It's about working together and doing something rather than waiting for something to be done by others.
