Isn't it Time to Get Involved in the PSAI?
By Karleen Kos, PSAI Executive Director
I know, I know. You are incredibly
busy at your company and you
hardly have time to think. How
could you possibly think about
volunteering with the PSAI?
Guess what. We have around 40
regular volunteers and they are just
like you. They run businesses and
keep a pretty heavy schedule too.
Some have children still in school –
but they make time to volunteer
because it pays off. They meet new
people. They learn things that help
them in their businesses. They get
to do something "different" that
helps them clear their heads and
think about things differently.
But don't take it from me. Forbes
did an article about the benefits of
volunteering, and here's what they
found:
• Volunteering time makes
you feel like you have
more time. Wharton
professor Cassie Mogilner wrote in the Harvard Business Review that her research found those who
volunteer their time feel like they have more of it. This is similar to other research showing that people
who donate to charity feel wealthier.
• Volunteering your skills helps you develop new skills. Skills-based volunteering is an excellent opportunity
to develop talents to help you get ahead in your career. In fact, an article in Stanford Social Innovation
Review called skills-based volunteering "the next executive training ground."
So how can you get involved in the PSAI? Join a committee! The organization has several active groups that are
involved in moving the Association and the industry forward. Step up and offer your services to any of them. The
chairs would love to have you. Going to Nuts and Bolts? Drop in on a committee meeting (check out the schedule
on page 17 and get a feel for what the group(s) that interest you are working on. You'll be glad you did.
