Getting a Bit Abstract
Does this exhibit classify portable sanitation as an
art form?
There's an art museu m in New York with
portable toilets installed inside that are not
being serviced by anyone. They are bright,
they are many, and they are an exhibit! Artist
Andreas Slominski's latest installation of
portable restrooms includes wall panels he
formed himsel f on the factory production line
with imagery you never expected to see
molded into the familiar plastic. Take a look at
how he used the space, placing units at angles
that would make a pumper cringe. From the press release: "With their contrasting white p itched roofs
and black bases, the toilets …transform from ordinary utilitarian objects into playful sites of refuge. In
their pristine state, shipped directly to the gallery from the manufacturer, they are imbued with a
seductive materiality that belies th eir intended function." Maybe some of our Members agree?

An Accident Waiting to Happen…
Some items really should be used solely for their intended purposes
The Preakness toilet runs have been happening
for more than a decade and they appear to be
just as stupid as ever. We can't imagine a
portable restroom operator would be held
responsible for this silliness, but it's not a bad
idea to have a talk with your lawyer or insurance
agent if you think this could happe n to your fleet.
A good rental contract can limit liability and a
good insurance policy can protect your assets if
stupid wins.
