Update: Berkeley City Council Debates Designated Portables for
Homeless Encampment
This article highli ghts the new developments in
last week's story regarding Berkeley's
sanitation issues near their homeless
encampment
Berkeley City Council has passed a motion to
continue talks on placing a portable toilet in
the First They Came for the Homeless
encampmen t. On October 17th the council
will resume discussion regarding two

location of the unit. Director of Health, Paul
Buddenhagen, advises against providing a toilet solely for use of the homeless community, as the
FTC FTH encampment is one of many in the City, and they are concerned about preferential treatment.
Councilmember Ben Bartlett argues, however, that the community is a model organization and that he
believes they deserve it. What we've learned from their n eighbors to the south is a decision must be
reached soon. A stall on providing a stall affects more than one community.
