W EEKLY EDITION MAR 1, 2017 P AGE 6 The 2017 Industry Resource Directory Has Been Mailed …continued Below is an article as it appears in the 2017 IRD – watch your mailboxes, as they should arrive this week! 11 2017 INDUSTRY RESOURCE DIRECTORY Portable sanitation companies are located throughout the United States, as shown in the chart below. As previously explained, there is no worldwide entity that collects data for the portable sanitation industry. This can be attributed to the relatively small size of the portable sanitation industry (likely between 0.01 and 0.03 percent of the global economy), in comparison to industries for which aggregated data are kept. Limitations of various governmental reporting schemes also contribute to the dearth of available data. Due to these factors, we cannot show a similar chart for the size and scope of the portable sanitation industry worldwide. US Census collects and analyzes business data every !ve years. The most recent data are from 2012, which the government released in mid-2016. Available information depicts an industry that struggled through the recession beginning in late 2007. By 2012 signs of recovery were evident, as shown in the chart on page 13. Note that even as times got better, total employment in the sector decreased by more than 7%. Operational ef!ciency appears to be the explanation for this trend. As shown, receipts per employee and per dollar of payroll went up. Because improving economic conditions increased competition for employees, payroll per employee also went up, which blunted some of the ef!ciency gains.
