Ibis World data through mid-2016 indicate total revenue for the sector is around $5.2 billion, or roughly 0.01% to 0.03% of the US gross domestic product. Preliminary Ibis World data through mid-2016 con!rm the recovery has continued; the company has published an estimated annual revenue growth rate between 2011 and 2016 of 3.6% for the sector. Prior industry growth between 2007 and 2012 had been just 2.9% according to the US Census Bureau, so 3.6% would indicate a quickening pace of growth in the years since. For comparison, the US gross domestic product grew approximately 2.8% to 4.3% per year during the 2013–16 period, meaning the portable sanitation industry has generally performed at a similar pace as the rest of the US economy. While anecdotal information from PSAI Members suggests that the past two years have indeed been quite good, the degree of recovery cannot be fully assessed by combining these two data sets. This is because they are not based on exactly the same raw data inputs.
