W EEKLY EDITION MAR 1, 2017 P AGE 5 The 2017 Industry Resource Directory Has Been Mailed …continued Below is an article as it appears in the 2017 IRD – watch your mailboxes, as they should arrive this week! 9 2017 INDUSTRY RESOURCE DIRECTORY Size and Scope of the Industry As of 2013 there were some 3,261 portable sanitation and septic pumping establishments operating in the United States, according to the US government. This was down 2.3% from 3,344 the previous year. The latest detailed data available for companies listed as primarily or exclusively focused on portable sanitation is from the 2012 US Economic Census. At that time there were 1,060 such enterprises, or 33% of the total. It should be noted that these are not the only companies providing portable sanitation. One of the unique qualities of portable sanitation is that it is complementary to several other business lines, including solid waste removal, construction rental and support (equipment/fencing/barricades), party and event planning, and temporary storage, among others. Many of the companies providing other goods and services report their business results under different NAICS codes and would not be shown in the Economic Census numbers for the portable sanitation and septic industry. Using a broader estimation process, Ibis World reports nearly 8,400 establishments operating in this space in 2016, down 3.4% from 2015. 7,318 1,060 Portable Sanitation-speci!c Businesses Portable Sanitation Included in Business Source: Ibis World and US Economic Census Total Industry Establishments Source: US Economic Census Portable Sanitation and Septic Pumping Establishments 3,344 1,060 2,284 3,261 2012 2013 CONTINUED ON PAGE 6
