P AGE 4 8 2017 INDUSTRY RESOURCE DIRECTORY There is no international mechanism for gathering and reporting business data, and all portable restroom companies are privately held. Hence, the nature of the industry makes it dif!cult to gather detailed data from these small businesses, which often have their own reasons for not disclosing it. Though there are few sources of veri!able data for the industry, the US government and private publisher Ibis World both publish numbers that are of interest to those seeking to understand the size and scope of the portable restroom sector. Both of these sources group portable sanitation with related industries such as "septic tank and related services." Because of this, it is somewhat challenging to extract data that is exclusive to portable sanitation. Even so, we can infer some numbers and trends that are indicators of our industry's current condition. We can also provide an outlook for the next few years since data for the most important industry drivers are available. The following information is based on: • Ibis World's October 2016 report on Portable Toilet Rental and Septic Tank Cleaning businesses in the United States • US Economic Census data from 2012 and 2013 (the latest available) on business patterns for businesses categorized under NAICS codes 562991 and 5629912, including those in the portable sanitation industry • Information from PSAI Members The portable sanitation industry represents a small but vital group of businesses around the world. A variety of sources estimates there are about 3.2 million portable restrooms in service around the world, with English-speaking North America representing between 1.8 million and 2 million of that total. In 2015–16 the North American industry was represented by about 8,400 companies doing $5.2 billion in gross revenue each year. INDUSTRY OVERVIEW CONTINUED ON PAGE 5
