ASSOCIATIONINSIGHT Portable Sanitation Association International News BIWEEKLY EDITION JULY 7, 2021 Page 8 At this time, Ken also designed the "Sure Flush" unit, which is a portable flush toilet with a trap at the bottom of the bowl. This trap, or flapper, controls odor and prevents splash back. The unit design in still in use today. Born in 1974, son Roger was always involved in the family business as he explains, "I was always around Dad and Mom (Ruthann) at work. At the age of 12 or 13, I began to stock the service trucks. Soon I was cleaning units, and over time, I would move the trucks around the yard." Ken shared several pieces of knowledge with Roger that have shaped and impacted his life and his career. Roger's messages from Ken were: • Get an education first and don't limit your possibilities. • You are either a follower or a leader. • When you fall, get back up and keep trying. • Never lie to the person in the mirror. Roger has followed his fathers' advice quite well over the years. He earned a degree in economics, and then he returned to K Winter Sanitation to begin his business career in the mid- 1980s. "My son is 15 and my daughter is 13; I am passing on that same advice [regarding the importance of] getting an education to them. Don't limit your possibilities in life," Roger explains. As far as being a leader, Roger has served in many industry organizations and associations. His work includes: • President of OASIS (Ontario Association of the Sewage Industry Services, founded in 1991) • Two-year President of NAWT (National Association of Wastewater Technicians, Inc) Further, he states that "I would like to become involved with the PSAI Board in the next several years." Today, K Winter has a wide array of construction projects in and around the Toronto Metropolitan Area. The jobs range from high rises to underground projects. The company has had several large jobs with Carillion Canada, one of the leading construction companies in the country. The Toronto Union Station Revitalization Project from 2010–2015 was one of their largest and required "innovative measures to provide the service," according to Roger. Narrow passages under the street and in other tunnel areas necessitated that K Winter Sanitation install wheels on certain sink stations, collapsible roofs on some units, and adapt to very stringent service schedules based on job requirements. As you might imagine, Ken and Roger's creativity and flexibility exceeded the expectations of this large customer. K Winter Sanitation has developed several other products that now meet and exceed Canadian regulations. A warm water sink is now available in all their units that can heat water to between 95-115 degrees and requires only a 90 second recovery period between uses is one such item. The company has also developed an optional infrared heater light mounted in the ceiling of a toilet unit that heats the person and the toilet seat, according to the K Winter company advertising. While the warm water sink is important during cold weather in general, this item has been incredibly popular and in high demand during the continuing COVID pandemic.
