Repeat further reflects, "As a small kid I would hang out after school and by the time I was 11 or 12, I would be there 6-7 hours after school, helping where I could." Repeat provided a good description of the relationship between the three generations of Cutlers working at Sani-Hut: "I was there as a kid exploring everything and asking questions while Grandpa was being a thorn in my Dad's side with all of his questions; meanwhile dear old Dad was doing his best to try and run the business." In recent years, Sani-Hut has become increasingly involved in fire service in the Sierra Nevada Mountains stretching across both Nevada and California. In addition, both Fred Jr and Repeat were actively involved in developing COVID guidelines for portable restrooms, sink stations, and hand sanitizing units. The company's long and distinguished career in the Reno-Sparks community continues to provide help to the local residents. As far as a fourth generation of Cutlers running the Sani-Hut firm, Repeat says that his 14-year-old daughter Hayley Cutler will have to decide on her own. All the generations of his family have famously conveyed the fact that, "It looked like fun." From Fred Sr to Fred Jr to Fred V, Sani-Hut is a cherished family legacy. The PSAI 50th Anniversary Convention will be held in Reno, Nevada from February 1-4, 2022, and I cannot think of a more appropriate area to celebrate our history! Ken and Roger Winter Ken Winter was born on November 19, 1938, in Barrie, Ontario, Canada, which is located about 50 miles north of Toronto. His father was an engineer who worked digging various types of wells. When his dad suddenly died, Ken was forced to end his formal education in the seventh grade. Though his schooling had ended, young Ken's interest in, and knowledge of, mechanical equipment—as well as meeting customers' needs—have been passions that have continued throughout his life. In 1962 at only 24 years of age, Ken founded K Winter Sanitation Inc in Innisfil, Ontario. The experience he had gained digging wells had been supplemented by work repairing water and vacuum pumps. The septic tank industry was ideally suited for these skills. As we have seen from so many of the profiles of the early founders of our industry, Ken began by building wooden portable restrooms. Always with a flair for advertising good customer service, he came up with one of the most unique slogans that I have encountered: "No splinters, use Winters." Quality wooden units with no splinters to harm the customer. This one phrase encapsulates Ken Winter's personality and his desire to serve his customers. By 1974 the septic tank portion of his business had evolved almost exclusively to portable restroom rental and service. K Winter Sanitation's service area soon spread south to Toronto and about 80 miles both north and the west of the Barrie-Innisfil area. Ever the "inventor at heart," Ken made his own fiberglass units! According to PRO Magazine in October 2009, Ken Winter was inspired by a trip to Vancouver, British Colombia, where he saw several locally manufactured fiberglass portable restroom units. So K Winter Sanitation soon made their own fiberglass units, which they used for a time before transitioning to the purchase of plastic restrooms. Ken and Roger Winter Continued on page 8
