A Closer Look at the Truck Driver Shortage…continued from page 5
How can you adjust your routes, your work, and your procedures to make the job more accessible to women?
How can you entice women to train for and join your firm? Is this a whole labor pool you could develop?
• Creatively marketing the company and the jobs. Some firms have made videos showing "a day in the life" of
key workers. Some work with local schools to recruit graduates.
• Considering hires from local homeless organizations and jails. While many of these folks are just not ready to
hold any job, a good relationship with the social workers can help you find people who really do want to work
and deserve a chance. They might be better suited to the yard, but if that frees up someone else you can train
to drive, everyone wins. There are also tax credits in many areas you can get for hiring this type of worker.
The PSAI is also looking hard at these issues. We plan to hold a virtual roundtable discussion on Thursday,
August 19 covering Driver and Route Training Programs. We will also hold a half-day workshop at the
Nuts & Bolts Educational Conference on an industry-level response to the driver shortage—details of that
session will be announced in late July.
Our Members' Business Success Committee co-chaired by Wendy Cross and John Marcucci have been tasked
by the Board of Directors to recommend further actions the PSAI can take to help members with workforce
development. If you have ideas, share them with John and Wendy. Better yet, get involved in the Committee. We
can always use volunteers!
"I can say the willingness to get dirty has always defined us as a nation, and it's a hallmark of hard
work and a hallmark of fun, and dirt is not the enemy."—Mike Rowe, host of Dirty Jobs 2003–2020
