Fuel Prices: What to Expect Ahead…continued from page 14
• Invest in driver training and telematics. No matter how
experienced a driver is, they can learn how to improve
fuel economy by changing their habits around idling,
speeding, shifting improperly or too often, and braking
techniques. Telematics can help with this by providing
feedback that is difficult to refute. How a person thinks
they are driving is often different than what the data
shows—and even the best driver can improve. You may
want to consider driver incentive programs as well.
• Optimize routes. You can maximize vehicle efficiency
by reducing miles driven, time spent in traffic, and
the number of vehicles you need to put on the road.
Software programs can be a great help with this.
• Monitor fuel use with your fleet fuel card. Make sure you have the right card for your company and ask
questions about their software. These days you should be getting some great tools as part of your card
package.
In the end, the portable sanitation industry relies on fuel, and the variable costs you experience will affect your
bottom line. If you haven't already done so, strategize with your team and decide if and how you will pass along
these extra costs to your customers. Ours is certainly not the only industry having to make adjustments. As with
other things, customers appreciate transparency and ethical behavior. They see the prices at the pump. Help them
see how that translates on your invoice and continue to take care of them. This, too, will pass. v
