ASSOCIATIONINSIGHT Portable Sanitation Association International News BIWEEKLY EDITION MARCH 3, 2021 Page 17 Consider a small company with five trucks on the road, each being driven 35,000 miles per year, which ATRI estimates is about average for vehicles in the same class as portable sanitation pumpers. Operating Costs of Trucks In 2019, the average cost per mile for fleets decreased significantly. ATRI attributes this reduction to changes in certain line-item costs, including fuel, repair and maintenance, and wages and benefits. Data for 2020 won't be out until November 2021, and we can expect that more recent costs, driven by COVID-19, will exceed the 2019 numbers. But in the last set of full data published, costs dropped between years. While 2018 brought the highest demand in 20 years and record-setting tonnage, 2019 brought a tightening. ATRI's data shows that in 2019, the costs of trucking dropped from $1.821 to $1.652 per mile, a decrease of nine percent. The operating cost per hour was approximately $65.11, down from $71.78 in the prior year's report. In 2019 ATRI data reveals that two traditionally high cost centers, fuel and driver compensation, actually dropped between 2018 and 2019. Usually, they place upward pressure on the overall cost per mile (CPM). Their decrease in 2019 partially contributed to an overall reduction in operating costs. While the data reported by ATRI includes commercial trucks of all types, the degree of the reported change and the upward trends over time can inform PSAI member companies who are interested in closely managing their vehicle fleet expenses.
