ASSOCIATIONINSIGHT Portable Sanitation Association International News BIWEEKLY EDITION JANUARY 20, 2021 Page 4 Continued on page 5 Standards News…continued from page 1 The PSAI is an ANSI-accredited standards developer, and in 2021 we will be working on updating three ANSI/PSAI standards. The current versions, published in 2016, are available free to PSAI members in the Industry Library. • ANSI/PSAI Z4.1 Sanitation—In Places of Employment—Minimum Requirements This standard applies to sanitation in all places of employment except where domestic, mining, or common carrier transportation work is performed. It has previously been seen as relevant to portable sanitation because the minimum standards in all places of employment serve as the benchmark by which the adequacy of portable or temporary sanitation alternatives is measured. Issues to be addressed in 2021: The key question regarding this standard is whether it is still relevant to portable sanitation and, if not, what should be done about that. • ANSI/PSAI Z4.3 Sanitation—Non-sewered Waste–Disposal Systems—Minimum Requirements This standard applies to sanitary waste disposal systems for all places of employment where such systems are not connected to a sanitary sewer, septic tank, or on site sewage disposal treatment facility. Its purpose is to assure that employees who don't have access to indoor sewered toilets are provided with healthful and adequate alternatives. Issues to be addressed in 2021: This standard is the one most commonly cited for sanitation on job sites. The ratio of units to workers, service and cleaning schedules, as well as standards for hand wash will all need to be reviewed and updated in this document. • ANSI/PSAI Z4.4 Sanitation—In Fields and Temporary Labor Camps—Minimum Requirements This standard prescribes minimum environmental health requirements for camps (whether temporary or permanent) for temporary labor and for field sanitation. The purpose is to protect the health of these workers and, indirectly, the health of the public who may consume agricultural produce from these fields. Issues to be addressed in 2021: This standard is most commonly relevant for agricultural job sites and related facilities. Like the previous standard, the ratio of units to workers, service and cleaning schedules will need to be reviewed and updated, as will hand wash procedures. Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) have been evolving since the last version of this standard was published, and so additional areas may also need to be updated. Portable Sanitation Best Practices Since the early 1990s, the PSAI has created and taught best practices related to the role of service technicians. The related manual covers a wide range of topics such as proper servicing techniques for major equipment classes, health, and safety. In 2021 we will be updating the latest version of these practices. Issues to be addressed in 2021: The revised document will take into account how changes brought about by technologies such as telematics, the increased use of trailers, and the impact of COVID-19 affect service technicians' work each shift. It will also account for changes that may be made in ANSI standards, the evolving requirements of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and mandates from other regulatory agencies.
