ASSOCIATIONINSIGHT Portable Sanitation Association International News BIWEEKLY EDITION DECEMBER 23, 2020 Page 4 Continued on page 15 Portable Sanitation Company Resolutions for 2021…continued from page 3 4. Assemble documents for tax preparation Several of the more experienced operators listed collecting tax records as a priority that appears on their lists every year. Most strive to complete their year-end results by mid-January, and then tax preparation begins immediately. Hopefully by the April 15 tax deadline, two operators mentioned that they wanted to be busy getting back into the event business as opposed to "last minute tax filing." 5. Update license renewal dates and certifications for the year (both for the company and for the employees) Requirements vary between companies, states, and municipalities but "renewing licenses" was a business resolution that was mentioned. The beginning of the year, if possible, is a good time to take care of any license, certification, or other similar transactions. Resolutions Related to Employees As essential as measuring, analyzing, and projecting the results of the business is, meeting the needs of your company's employees is equally important. With 2020 being a year full of stress, uncertainty, illness, and hardship, employee well-being was a high priority among respondents. 1. Employee security and safety Being classified as an essential industry during the pandemic was a "positive" in terms of job security but a "negative" in terms of daily interaction with the public for service technicians in particular. Numerous PSAI articles, virtual roundtables, and the November PSAI Virtual Educational Conference and Trade Show gave members suggestions, insight, and resources to help them establish and maintain a safe workplace. Morning health questionnaires, separating route service technicians and office personnel, and providing additional PPE for both administrative and field personnel were some of the suggestions offered to assist with protecting all employees as much as possible during this pandemic. The business resolutions mentioned here were basically "we are committed to doing more of the same in 2021." 2. Reviewing the company policy manual Several respondents mentioned this not only as a 2021 business resolution for their own company but also suggested it for other companies as well. Many new safety protocols, new policies related to working from home, sick days, isolation if potential contact with someone with COVID, and much more, have been in place in 2020. Companies should evaluate them and make sure they are added to the company policy manual. No matter how long COVID continues, the policies will likely serve you well if the future brings other pandemics and disruptions.
