ASSOCIATIONINSIGHT Portable Sanitation Association International News BIWEEKLY EDITION NOVEMBER 11, 2020 Page 22 Legal Cannabis—Driving the Portable Sanitation Industry Crazy…Continued from page 15 There's also a problem with the science. Decades of prohibition on the use of marijuana have limited science's knowledge of its effects on driving. Studies to date haven't been able to determine a correlation between THC levels and an inability to drive safely, according to both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the American Automobile Association. So if you live in a state where use of marijuana is allowed, and you run a company where you could—in theory—employ a driver who occasionally uses pot, you and your insurance company have nothing to help you decide how much is too much. Just Say No In most cases, the answer on portable sanitation drivers' use of marijuana is going to be a categorical "no." Whether this is because you live in a state that hasn't legalized cannabis yet, your company falls under the FMCSA, you personally are against it—or all of the above—you need to have a clear policy explaining this prohibition and how it is enforced in your company. In Part II of this article we will take a look at policies throughout the portable sanitation industry. v • Through your involvement you will help craft the language for the updated standards and vote on whether to accept the language proposed. • Suggest others who are directly and materially affected so that we can invite them to engage. People from outside the industry representing end users from the public, government, labor, and industry are always needed. Who do you know? • Read the proposed standards and provide feedback. The PSAI expects to have these drafts ready early 2021. Contact me to get a copy for review. A lot has changed since we updated the standards five years ago. Much of the impact on portable sanitation was impossible to predict. So our standards language must reflect the changed world in which we live, and the new portable sanitation world we are trying to create. Get involved! You don't need psychic powers; just come with an interest in creating better worksites, better weekends, and a better world. v Standards for a New Age… Continued from page 9 Don't Miss Our Roundtables The PSAI has been offering virtual roundtables regularly since early this year.
