Tips for Effective Operations around Natural Disasters…continued from page 16
The lead manager can also contact team members to see if they have been impacted by the disaster.
• Have a land line at the office in case cell phone towers are down. (Yes, there is still a need for the old fashioned
land lines!)
• Have a backup generator on the premises in case of a power loss. Computers can then continue to operate
and to provide and to receive necessary data.
• Have at least a month's supply of necessary supply items such as toilet paper and deodorizer.
Emergency Response Team Coordinator
• Have a designated operations contact person
and notify them first in the case of any dangerous
emergency of which you have knowledge.
• Have all team members check-in with the
operations contact person.
• In the case of an emergency at your location, be
thoroughly familiar with emergency procedures, exit
routes from the building, and evacuation assembly
areas.
• Know the location of fire extinguishers and how to
use them.
• Be familiar with the location of utility shut off valves
and their operation.
• Have at least one person in each office location trained in CPR and in first aid.
• Practice this plan. Nancy states that the company has an "earthquake day" each year where these plans are
explained, reviewed, and practiced.
Final Thoughts
"BE PREPARED." That was Nancy's summary of the many
years of experience that her company has used in dealing
with earthquakes, fires, and floods. As a Boy Scout and an
Eagle Scout, "BE PREPARED," the official Scout Motto, is an
idea that I have found is invaluable in business and in life.
The PSAI also offers a training course entitled "Portable
Sanitation: Preparing for Extremes" which may also be of
benefit to your company. The course covers:
• Optimizing and protecting equipment in cold
conditions
• Minimizing odor and protecting workers in hot conditions
• Preparing your business for hazardous conditions
• Providing service during or after natural disasters
It will be offered virtually on October 15, 2020. Check out psai.org for details. v
