ASSOCIATIONINSIGHT Portable Sanitation Association International News BIWEEKLY EDITION SEPTEMBER 2, 2020 Page 7 Restroom Trailers: Thoughts and Trends in 2020…continued from page 4 David Leal—NorCal Portable Services, Gilroy, California Like most other operators, David has seen a drastic decline in special events, resulting in a decline in trailer rentals, particularly in large trailers. NorCal, however, has a large fleet of trailers with a variety of configurations that allow customers to select options that they might not have considered in the pre-COVID environment, such as single unit trailers for job sites and shower trailers. He continues, "We have seen an increase in rentals at COVID-19 testing sites as well as hospitals in our service area." The two-stall trailer with an ADA stall is the most popular rental for these customer types. David has seen dramatic growth in the trailer market during the last 15 years and, again, having a variety of trailer offerings is the key to maintaining business in changing environments. "We offer trailers from two station to 10 stations, two station trailers with ADA, and one- to four-unit solar powered units. In addition, we have an inventory of shower trailers ranging from three-station to eight-station models." As far as COVID-19 protocol, NorCal cleans and sanitizes their trailers on the yard and then again after set-up. Once they are returned to the yard, the units are cleaned and sanitized yet again. They employ a 30 percent bleach and water-based cleaner which has proven to be extraordinarily successful. In the future, he sees more trailers with shower stations and hand wash stations as the need for hygiene continues to escalate. David suggests that trailers with combinations of amenities will increase in demand. "Our three-station shower and restroom trailer are very popular as is our six-station shower and restroom combination." Among other future trends that David sees are trailers with an individual toilet and an individual sink in the same stall. This avoids "community" hand washing and gives the user more control of their restroom visit. Solar powered trailers will also lessen the need for power connections and allow for increased flexibility of placement at the customer's location. As far as any concerns or suggestions, David—like most of the operators I interviewed—is always aware of the ADA access issue. His solution is the two-stall unit with the ADA, but more options need to become available. Nancy Gump—Andy Gump Temporary Site Services, Santa Clarita, California As the third generation owner of a company that was founded in 1956, Nancy Gump has a wealth of knowledge to share concerning restroom trailers. Concerning this year, Nancy states, "events are gone." Her company, however, has a wide variety of product offerings and services that have helped to bridge the gap during this unique and unpredictable business environment. Nancy points to an increased demand for smaller trailers in today's marketplace. As we have seen earlier, she also is seeing this demand come from COVID-19 testing sites and hospitals. New uses are also making themselves known. Continued on page 15 David Leal Nancy Gump
