ASSOCIATIONINSIGHT Portable Sanitation Association International News BIWEEKLY EDITION AUGUST 5, 2020 Page 5 Continued on page 13 Congratulations Alyssa! Alyssa Moon, the fourth of our five PSAI 2020 scholarship winners, grew up in Headingley, Manitoba and graduated from St. Mary's Academy this June. She plans to start her college career at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks later in August. Her aim is to study marketing and entrepreneurship, earn a bachelor's degree in business economics, and ultimately start her own business. During high school, Alyssa spent all four years working for the Yearbook and serving as its editor. She also had a very active career in track and field until two major injuries put her on the sidelines for eight months. It seemed that her goal of competing in Canada NCAA competition was slipping away, but she persevered and met that goal. In addition to her busy academic and extracurricular schedule, Alyssa spent summers working at a local gardening center and trying her hand as a marketing assistant at King's Services. Her school counselor ranked her commitment to school and her community as "excellent," so we know Alyssa has the qualities she needs to succeed. Below is Alyssa's essay. The Appearance of Portable Sanitation in Society The stigma against portable sanitation fosters incorrect ideas about the industry. Over the last decade, portable sanitation has been revolutionized. The products available today are not what most people thing about when the industry is discussed. As technology has evolved, companies are able to create new, revolutionary products that rewrite how portable sanitation is viewed in society. Instead of the traditional plastic toilets, many companies are introducing wash room trailer units. These trailers are top of the line bathrooms that might even be nicer than your bathroom in your own home! The luxury that is being introduced to portable sanitation should be broadcast. Many companies are offering extravagant wash room trailers complete with flushing toilets, air conditioning, and even stereo systems. Many people still do not recognize what portable sanitation has to offer which in turn is hurting the industry's image in the eyes of the public because unfortunately society still sees portable sanitation as filthy. Millennials especially try to avoid using portable toilets because of the distorted view that all portable toilets are foul-smelling and dirty. Recently, portable sanitation companies are prioritizing customer experience. The cleaning process is often more in depth, and the chemicals used are becoming less harsh. Ultimately this will have a long-term positive impact on the portable sanitation industry because it is breaking the stigma that portable toilets are not an adequate waste removal system.
