ASSOCIATIONINSIGHT Portable Sanitation Association International News BIWEEKLY EDITION JULY 8, 2020 Page 6 Or when he was in college, on those long days spent sitting in a car traveling across the country on a once-in-a- lifetime road trip, how he and his friends would sigh in relief as they saw portable restrooms from afar. It was a place to stop and freshen up, and it allowed them to continue to make memories they would cherish for years to come. Or back to several years ago, long before the grandchildren were even figments in his and his wife's imagination, when the hurricane had struck his small town. Leaving a path of devastation so severe, that they didn't have a home anymore, so much as a place to use the bathroom or even wash their hands. The portable sanitation had been a saving grace, just as important as the food and water that they had been supplied with. A place that made them feel a little more human in a time of such tragedy. Something that you did not appreciate until you no longer had it. The old man's heart broke know that his grandchild did not have, and may never have, the same respect for portable sanitation that he and so many others did. It was at that moment that he realized that things needed to change. The grandfather needed to teach these children, and anyone who would listen, why they need to respect and appreciate portable sanitation. He need to tell them the stories of those in distress, of how portable sanitation helped them during the natural disasters of the past and presumably of those in the future to come. The grandfather would tell the children that the recycled plastic that makes up the walls of the restroom, and its ability to save hundreds of gallons of water was helping the planet that they all loved so much. That the grass they played on may brown and wither away without it. He'd remind them of the t-ball games, class field trips, and family outings that would diminish in fun and happiness without the access to a pace to wash their hands or use the bathroom. Maybe then they would understand. Maybe then it would no longer be a place that people turned their noses away in disgust or a place for his grandchildren to send one another for torment. It would no longer be shown poorly in the media, or be the punchline of a poorly written joke. When they thought of portable sanitation, their minds would fill with not only respect, but appreciation. "Sit down, children." The grandfather spoke quietly, beckoning them to come closer. The children sat in front of the old man, their eyes wide with curiosity. "It's time that your grandfather taught you an important lesson." v Watch the next three issues of the newsletter to meet the rest of our scholarship winners!
