ASSOCIATIONINSIGHT Portable Sanitation Association International News BIWEEKLY EDITION JULY 8, 2020 Page 4 Continued on page 11 A Worldly Perspective on Deodorizers and Odor Control…continued from page 3 Ola reports that, "Fragrance spray is a must for all events and construction jobs." They have found, "For an eight- hour period, we use 500 milliliters of fragrance for two toilets." As far as fragrance disks, A-mobile has found that in their hot weather, the disks tend to dry out quite easily and are not effective. When placing units to control odor and air flow, Ola says, "Each event differs. For example, for religious events, female toilets are placed as far away as possible from male units." She continues, "For social events that are not religious, we always advise a minimum of two toilets near each other in order to use one attendant for both units." Attendants are a good idea that A-mobile has incorporated into its business model. They use attendants for all toilets rented for events. According to Ola, "this has helped us to ensure that toilets are kept clean. The client also pays for this service." Restroom trailers are treated with fragrance spray which "works perfectly and lasts longer." A-mobile has an excellent tip for other operators providing trailers: always have a standby power fan or air cooler just in case there is an issue with the restroom trailer's air-conditioning during the event. As for logistical tips to help to control odor and to provide customer comfort, A-mobile always does a site visit to ensure success. Shade is one factor that is taken into consideration. Ola said that they have had only one "interesting situation" and that was when "one of their trailers was stuck at the beach for a couple of days." PT. Sewatoilet, Indonesia Ding Ding Dewi shared some particularly useful information from Indonesia. His country, made up of a large series of islands, is also near the equator. It is located just north of Australia and south of both Vietnam and the Philippines. In addition to the heat, PT Sewatoilet also must adapt to rainy conditions. As Ding Ding Dewi puts it, "We have two seasons: raining and not raining." The "not raining season" is very dry and "the scent of deodorizers in units [lasts] less than six hours. In the rainy season, however, the scent can last over six hours." This has an impact on planning for special events in terms of the amount of deodorizer to use in their units. In either season, his company makes a point "to place the toilet in an area with no direct sunlight." In their restroom trailers, PT. Sewatoilet does not use fragrance sprays. They do employ fragrance disks that "last all day long." As with A-mobile in Nigeria, PT. Sewatoilet also uses a fan as a backup to any trailer- based air conditioning problems during an event. This is a very useful tip for all operators, in that either a solar-powered or a well-charged battery power source can provide cool air either while the A/C problem is being fixed or for the remainder of the event if the repair is more complex. Avoiding hot temperatures inside restroom trailers not only provides user comfort but also reduces odors.
