As NASA prepares for a return to the moon junket, it is challenging "the global community" to devise compact toilets that can operate in both micro- and lunar gravity for use in the Artemis lunar landers. Int'l Space Station Gets New UWMS The International Space Station is looking forward to a special delivery this fall: a new and improved toilet system. The goal of the upgrade is to prepare astronauts for longer missions where waste volume (and the risk of cross-contamination) could be an issue. The current Universal Waste Management System or UWMS (at left) was designed in the 1990s and can be harder for women to use. Read the full story here. Toilet Operators in Mumbai Need Fees Since local officials waived toilet fees in April, many toilet operators have had to shut their restrooms. Traditionally, patrons pay attendants for keeping restrooms clean. Since the change, operators have had no income with which to pay attendants and cover the increased use of water and sanitizers. Operators believe the city should provide cleaning supplies and protective equipment for attendants. Read the full story here. WC Reading Room Is a Hit To support community members during the pandemic while book stores and libraries are closed, a woman in Hawksland, Scotland decided to convert a retired portable water closet into a free lending library. The "Reading Room," as it's called, is set up on a road side at the town's center. The unit has been retrofitted with three sides of shelves for the books, DVDs, board games, and puzzles. Patrons can use the library on the honor system, and donate to a community charity if they choose. Read the full story here.
