ASSOCIATIONINSIGHT Portable Sanitation Association International News BIWEEKLY EDITION JULY 8, 2020 Page 11 Continued on page 12 A Worldly Perspective on Deodorizers and Odor Control…continued from page 4 Mapreco, SA, Guatemala Alvaro Zepeda built and is General Manager of a very well-run company in Guatemala. This Central American PSAI Member visited my former company, Pit Stop of Georgia, in Atlanta several years ago and his industry insight was extensive. In extremely hot areas, Mapreco increases the concentration of deodorizer at special events. According to Alvaro, "We look for a deodorizer that eliminates bad odors while not adding much odor itself." An innovative idea that Alvaro shared is that they add "flavored water" (a strong fragrance added to the water) to their recirculating portable restroom units. "We avoid the problem of recirculation that causes a lot of bad smell." Mapreco does not use fragrance spray "because it has a very short effect and is very expens[ive]." In addition, they only use fragrance disks at "very special events." Alvaro shared his advice on conducting successful special events. He says, "It is very important that restrooms are placed in highly ventilated locations and that customer staff is assigned to check them regularly." By checking for any trash inside the unit as well as checking the paper supply, this will add to the attendees' enjoyment of the event. Room To Go, Inc, Canada Keri Madden's company is primarily in the restroom trailer rental and service business, and she has some great ideas to add as well. "Extra deodorizer in the waste tank is an excellent way in which to control odor," she says. In addition, Keri recommends placing trailers in the shade where possible. For their non-air- conditioned trailers, shade is a definite consideration. Keri shares a very important tip in terms of controlling any odors and providing the cleanest trailer available for the customer. "Between events, each trailer is thoroughly cleaned, including rinsing of the waste tank."
