W EEKLY EDITION SEPTEMBER 4, 2019 Prepa ri ng for Hurr ica ne Dori a n: PSAI a nd Me mb er s W o rk t o ge th e r to Co u n te r Mi sin fo rm at io n By Karleen Kos, PSAI Executive Director …continued from page 1 As soon as PSAI Members Ross Ambrose of AAA Porta Serve in High Springs , Florida, and Jennifer Corrigan of Naples , Florida, saw this communication, alarm bells went off inside their heads. We all know portable restrooms are vulnerable to high winds. We also know that it isn't possible or practical for portable sanitation operat ors to pick up and store every portable unit that might be in the path of a storm. Still, the tip - over tactic recommended by FHBA was just a bad idea. So Jennifer and Ross sprang into action. First Jennifer sent a note to the Executive Director of FHBA t hat said, in part: " I own JW Craft Portable Restrooms in Naples. I also sit on the board of directors for the Portable Sanitation Association International ( www.psai.org ). Our organization educates portable restroom co mpanies and the general public on the importance and the safety of portable sanitation, this includes emergency and disaster response. I absolutely love and appreciate the email you sent, however our industry's protocol for securing portable toilets on jo b sites is not what you have in your email." Jennifer then went on to offer to help the FHBA get it right. Meanwhile Ross also emailed the FHBA. He identified himself as a PSAI Member, pointed out that tipping over a portable unit could lead to health code violations, and offered some practical advice for FHBA members. Ross suggested that home builders: "1) Secure the units to trees or posts with straps 2) Place weight inside the units - cinder blocks, chains, 5 - gallon pails with water. 3) Zip - tie the doors or tie rope around the units to keep the doors closed." Ross closed his note with an invitation to the FHBA stating, "… we would be happy to work with your members to help them secure construction sites for hurricanes and high - wind e vents."
