Tips for Making Money
in the Portable Sanitation and Rental Business
By Karleen Kos, PSAI Executive Director
While that won't all fit in one newsletter, here are some tips to get you started . You may already be
doing some of these things , but perhaps you'l l find a few ideas worth thinking about as this season
winds down and you start planning for next year.
Selling and Customer Service Tips
1. Get payment up front . In the not - too - distant past, portable restroom operators were often
reluctant to ask for paymen t in advance. Nowadays, it is becoming more commonplace , and it is a
great way to improve the chances the rental experience will be a success for e veryone. Try renting
a car or getting a seat on an airplane without paying first!
In most cases , people are more invested in active communication with your firm when they alre ady
have money on the line. Customers will be more l ikely to tell you what they require and if their
needs have changed.
Once you have the contract and payment , be sure your refund policy compensates you for
reserving equipment if the customer cancels. You should not be taking all the risk in the case of
reductions or withdrawals of business. Again, consider the change fees charged by airlines —
there is a business precedent for recouping your lost business costs.
