W EEKLY EDITION AUGUST 7, 2019 Standards Raise the Bar and Inform Construction Customer Decisions By Karleen Kos, PSAI Executive Director The American Society for Safety Engineers (ASSE) released an updated version of its ANSI standard for Sanitation in Construction in July 2017, ANSI/ASSE A10.25 - 2017. It both complements and contrasts with the ANSI standards the PSAI released in 2016. As in its past editions, ANSI/ASSE A10.25 - 2017 addresses potable water, toilets, and general hand washing facilities on c onstruction sites. The updated ASSE standard is one of a series of safety standards that has been created by the ASSE Accredited Standards Committee on Safety in Construction and Demolition Operations. The series — including A10.25 — has been around for many years. Other standards in the series published by ASSE cover topics such as scaffolding, excavation, hot mix asphalt facilities, and emergency procedures for construction sites, among many others. Although ASSE has used the ANSI - mandated consensus proc ess for developing and updating the A10.25 standard on sanitation, the PSAI was not involved in the process — probably because ASSE and the PSAI were both unaware the other was writing a similar standard. Going forward, the PSAI will be involved in updates o f ANSI/ASSE A10.25, and we will similarly invite representatives from ASSE to the table when the PSAI's standards need to be updated. The standard applies to al l construction and demolition job sites, and it addresses potable water, toilets, and hand washing facilities. Here are some notable points from the standard: P AGE 7 CONTINUED ON PAGE 8
