Relationship Selling: Our Industry Runs On It
RETTERATH CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1
For 20 years, on my birthday each year I arrived at work to a message from Charlie wishing me a happy birthday along with
some little quip or anecd ote personal to me. It was a priceless moment and made me feel that, even though I was a lowly
sales assistant, one day I might become something greater than I could see.
Contrasting the various sales approaches I mentioned earlier against Charlie's way, I would buy from Charlie any day of the
week. He was invested in me — and in his relationship with me — for the long haul. I knew there was no way he would ever
send me down the wrong path.
Charlie has now been at the Star - Tribune for fifty - three yea rs. He is seventy - eight years young, and because he loves people
so much he still puts in a full day in spite of the fact that he is technically "retired" and is acting as a "part - time" sales
consultant. I also think the Star - Tribune, knowing what a relat ionship focused person he is, will do everything in its power to
hold on to him for as long as possible!
