P AGE 10 W EEKLY EDITION SEPTEMBER 19, 2018 For PSAI Members, Hurricane Florence was Truly Hit or Miss We checked in on Members who were in the reg ion By GR Anderson Jr., PSAI Communications Director Naturally hurricane season is something everyone in the portable sanitation industry is aware of, though some keep a closer eye on it than others. So we checked in with Members in and around the Carolin a coast . "It looks like a war zone down here," reports Corey Morton of Walex in Wilmington, North Carolina. "But I don't want to make it sound worse than it is." But Wilmington has been national news, as you can see here , for the tremendous flooding it h as suffered. The coastal city, with flooding from the Cape Fear and Brunswick rivers, not to mention the Atlantic coastline, has essentially turned into an island, cut off from the rest of the state, according to news reports. "It's a lot of flooding, and a lot of roads in and out are impassable," Morton says. "Luckily it was a category 1. There wasn't tremendous wind damage." Not that there isn't significant destruction to trees and roofs and the like. But Morton happily notes that the Walex building is standing with no damage. Morton also says that gas and food are getting into the city now. The fact that the storm moved so slowly was one of the problems. "It started Thursday, and it really wasn't done until Sunday, so really , it was about three to four days," he says. But Morton notes that the company is up and running and able to ship, and that employees are all safe and at work, though some are without power at home: "We dodged a huge bullet." Meanwhile, checking in with other Members offers a contrast. " Fortunately, w e were af fected very little by the storm," writes Sara Brownlee of Drain - Pro NC. " We are closer to the Western part of the state, and even though we had some pretty severe weather, we escaped any damage. Typical, blown over units, but that was the worst of it for us. " " We were fortu nate in our area of Western NC," writes Jamie Bates of Sonrise Sanitation, Inc. " We received about ½ inch of rain and little to no wind. " Association Insight contacted other Members in the area, but didn't hear back by deadline. We hope they are all safe. -- gr
