WEEKLY EDITION SEPTEMBER 19, 2018 The Art of Bidding: Understanding the Process Researching events, reviewing old permits, reading RFPs and more By Karleen Kos, PSAI Executive Director Big sports event. Huge crowds for most of a week. Hundreds of portable restroom units and hand-wash stations. Your brand emblazoned everywhere. Lucrative opportunity or nightmare? If you have been in a business longer than a football season, you know the answer is, "It depends." If the job will result in a fair profit for your company and the logistics are manageable, it is probably a no-brainer. But few contracts are that simple. There are always numerous considerations and, often, competitors' bids to account for. If you go high enough to make the profit you want, you could lose the job to someone underbidding your offer. If you go too low, you will lose money. In some cases, losing a little money may be okay with you. For example, you may see the chance to have your brand all over town at the high-profile event as "free" marketing — an investment in future high-end business opportunities. Nobody can afford to do that very often though. You don't need an MBA to know that losing money by design is no way to succeed at business. Thus, it is important to grow your skill at the art of bidding to maximize your desired results. As the result of the past few weeks in the office and the tutelage of my seasoned colleagues, I am pleased to report I've made a great leap. I now understand the difference between an educational conference and a trade show. So while you are all thinking all things related to the upcoming Nuts and Bolts Educational Conference, I am going to regale you with tidings of the 2019 Convention and Trade Show scheduled for March 26-29, 2019 in Mobile, Alabama. For starters, we have the floor plan. It's time for you and your team to strategize on placement because on September 27 we are going to have the booth-space priority drawing. You don't want to miss that. It will be completely transparent. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2 CONTINUED ON PAGE 7
