W EEKLY EDITION JUNE 13, 2018 PSAI Events are Good – And Survey Reveals Opportunities to Evolve and Grow …continued By K arleen Kos, PSAI Executive Director Part II: Events This year, more than half of the survey respondents did not attend the March 2018 Convention and Trade Show. Past survey respondent cohorts have included a comparatively small number of responses, few p eople who did not attend the event, and very few nonmember respondents. This has led to concern that results in those years did not tell the whole story because we really only heard feedback from the most faithful and dedicated PSAI Members. This year's da ta is more complete. Since our event attendance was quite good compared to prior years, we can attribute the change in the mix of respondents to the hard work done by Board Members, volunteers, and staff to encourage responses by nonmembers and non - attende rs. Here is the mix of responses received to the survey depicted by whether or not they attended the Convention and Trade Show in Portland. In general, the people most highly motivated to complete a survey like this one are those who have some "skin in t he game." Consequently, responses from attendees are also responses from Members. This is probably because there is little incentive for a nonmember non - attender to fill out the survey, even with the chance to win two free registrations to Nuts and Bolts 2 018. Nonmembers completed later questions about ideal future PSAI events and are well represented in those items, but not in the data regarding the Portland event. Attendance Drivers. People who come to PSAI events are usually Members before they registe r. Others join in conjunction with the registration process, and still others join at the event or shortly after. Therefore, by the time they f ill out the survey they are Members, though they may not have been just a short time earlier. This year approxima tely 30 companies joined the PSAI during "event season." As noted above, survey respondents represented 53 companies present in Portland or about 37.6% of the total companies represented there . Since we cannot be sure of the breakdown (operators v supplie rs) of the companies that did not specify their company type, the best we can say is that no less than 27% of the exhibitors and 25.6% of the operators ther e completed the survey. T his appears to constitute a representative sample. P AGE 2 CONTINUED ON PAGE 3
