A Reminder to Think Before You Throw
Preventing sewer blockages is simple: don't throw wet wipes down the drain!
An environmental group in London says that wet wipes
are to blame for more than 90% of all sewer blockages.
After finding over 500,00 0 single - use wipes on the
banks of the river Thames, they believe they are
changing the shape of the riverbed as well. The
problem stems from improper disposal, where some
companies claim to sell flushable wipes (and some
make no such claims) folks are choo sing the toilet over
the trash. "The best that can be hoped for if these get
into a sewer is that they get all the way to the
treatment works without snagging on anything and at
the works they can be screened out, then go to landfill
or incineration", says Tim Evans, CEO of a biodegradable consultancy firm. The Department of
Environment, Food and Rural affairs is working with manufacturers to make labeling about proper
disposal more clear on packaging.
