The Power is in the Potty
Civil engineers in India have created a toilet that produces energy from recycled
wastewater
A bioelectric toilet was created in India that recycles its own wast ewater and
creates energy in the process. Developed at the Department of Civil
Engineering at IIT in Kharagpur, the toilet contains a six - chambered reactor
which rotates the water one way and then the other, therefore creating
enough energy to light the ca bin and charge a few cell phones to boot. The
toilet will provide sanitation and more safety to arid communities lacking
power once it is manufactured on a commercial scale. "We have not finalized
the industry though many domestic and foreign industries ha ve approached us
for commercialization of the technology," explains Professor M.M Ghangrekar.
On the same campus the Department of Biotechnology has created paper
batteries that generate power from the bacteria found in sewage water, which they hope will ( among
many other uses) help give an extra boost to bioelectric toilets.
