• Small businesses accounted for 61.8% of the net new jobs created between 1993 and the first quarter of 2016.
See Figure 1.
• About half of all new small businesses survive 5 years or longer, and about one third survive t en years or more.

• Women own more than 36% of small businesses, while around 30% are owned by minorities and 9.3% are owned
by veterans. See Figure 4 on the next page .
• The SBO says about one - seventh (14.4%) of business owners are first - generation immigrants. The industries with
the greatest share of immigrant owners are accommodation and food services (29.1% of owners were born
outside the US) and transportation and warehousing (27.5% of owners were born outside the US).
• Small busi nesses are structured in a variety of ways. Those that do not employ others are typically sole
proprietorships or partnerships. Those that employ others are most commonly S - corps or C - corps, though other
structures are also found frequently. See Figure 5 o n the next page .
