Decline in Physical Retail Sales Provides Insight for Portable Sanitation By Karleen Kos, PSAI Executive Director Last week I happened upon a study called "The Future of Physical Retail." While most portable sanitation companies don't have storefronts where customers happen in, check out the goods, make purchases, and carry them away in shopping bags, there is a lot in this document that we can apply to strengthen businesses like yours. Background. As the Internet has taken over our lives, the perceived need for brick - and - mortar stores seems to have dropped significantly. According to data from Credit Suisee, the US – the biggest retail market in the world – saw 8,640 stores close in 2017, more than the 6,163 closures that occurred at the height of the 2008 financia l crisis . Similar things are happening in markets as widespread as China, the UK and Germany. Consultants from The Retail Performance Company report that 71% of retail executives expect to reduce space in the coming few years and 53% expect to reduce their employee headcount. Statistica reports that US online sales are projected to grow from $360 billion in 2016 to $603 billion in 2021. Since we know the entire economy is not likely to grow at a rate of 11% annually, the ascendance of online purchasing will, by definition, be drawing from the market share of more traditional purchasing channels like retail and face to face. WEEKLY EDITION April 25, 2018 The Future of PSAI Roundtables A message from Wendy Cross, Member Business Success Initiative Committee Co - Chair You know how you really enjoy those Roundtable discussions at the PSAI conferences and trade shows? How you can share ideas, challenges and get questions answered from your fellow industry colleagues? I know I sure do! Wouldn't it be nice if you could have that opportunity more than just t wice a year? What if you could join in on a discussion right from your computer or phone? The Member Business Success Initiative (MSI) committee might have the answer for you. We would like to launch "Virtual Roundtable" discussions exclusively for PSAI M embers on June 6. Basically, you'd be using your computer to join and participate in a round table discussion with your portable sanitation peers. We'll share more details on how it works later – but trust me, if you have a computer and Internet, you'll be able to do this. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2 CONTINUED ON PAGE 6
