The Unforeseen Risk of Dropping the Toilet Lid One scientist came dangerously close to losing his hearing – due to his courteousness after using the restroom When a former NASA physicist was stunned almost to deafness by the sound of a dropped toilet tank lid, he was determined to run the numbers and find out why. Philip Metzger began by finding the speed of sound in ceramic, which naturally led to calculating the vibration wavelength caused by dropping it. He then had to divide that number by the length of the lid since the shape of it would cause the sound to bounce back and forth. Have we lost you yet? But because the lid did not crack whe n he dropped it the energy was instead transformed to sound. And because the lid is concave it acted as an antenna and routed the sound directly into Metzger's face. Of course! Permanent hearing damage can result from a brief sound at around 140 decibels. Metzger's figures concluded that the sound of that lid falling a mere 8 inches and about 20 inches from his face was around 138 decibels. Thank your lucky stars portable toilets aren't made of ceramic, and if you ever drop a toilet tank lid close to your f ace, here's hoping it cracks! READ THE STORY
